Elisa Gueneau 2023 Les Terres Blanches Sancerre: 80% of Elisa’s vines are planted in the calcareous clay soils known locally as “terres blanches,” which give her Les Terres Blanches Sancerre its body, richness, and complexity. Here we have a firm citrus structure loaded with tension. Fruits are prominent with lemon pith, underripe papaya, and cactus pear. The acid is precise and prickly, bruised sage and lime zest persist with a white stone finish. Elisa Gueneau 2023 Les Griottes Sancerre: 20% of Elisa’s vines are planted in “caillottes” also referred to as “griottes,” which are stony soils that lend lovely fruity notes to her Les Griottes Sancerre. This limited offering comes from a single 30+ year-old vineyard in the village of Chavignol, one of the finest terroirs in Sancerre. Bright and crisp, with aromas of citrus, white peach, apricot, and green apple. One of our favorite cheerful countryside wineries has a whole new outfit with a bit more French flair. Head winemaker Didier Robert, affectionately known as ‘the most interesting man in the world’ for his resemblance to the Dos Equis man has released the fresh 2023 vintages of Elicio Blanc & Rouge with a new label design. The new art has synergy to the original but now includes an astronomical diagram of the moon, symbolizing the process of the Elicio grape harvest, which is under moonlight. This night harvest is done to preserve the grapes’ freshness by harvesting in the cooler temperatures, ahead of dawn. Located on the eastern coast of Corsica, a few steps away from the vineyard, the Pinia forest is the last large maritime pine forest on the Corsican coast. A true place of harmony between fauna and flora, this pine forest extends over 988 acres, bordered by the banks of the Urbinu pond and by 2.2 miles of turquoise beach. Pinia wines are made by Christophe Paitier within the Cave des Vignerons d’Aghione; a local coop of 12 families of winegrowers, spanning three generations, this cooperative farms over 1,000 hectares of vineyards together and are dedicated to their sustainable and ethical practices.
